LA's Rockabilly Review for the Rowdymen's debut CD "Rowdy Duty" First off, looking at the CD tracklist, this is a great selection of covers these crazy Canucks have chosen to interpret. What we get is high octane, edgy rockabilly music that takes the classics and updates the sound into the 21st century while respecting the original classics. This is hard rockin’ rockabilly music, not too dissimilar from Highway 13, that seems to be taken from a live set. But not to fear, this is a tight set that is very well recorded with all the instrument being crystal clear with perfect levels on the vocals. This band really knows how to play music that gets your interest, keeps it, and makes you want more. Of the covers they have chosen, my personal favorites are Joe Bennett & Sparkletones “Black Slacks”, Gene Vincent’s “Say Mama” and Johnny Burnette’s “Lonesome Train”. All of the songs here are energetic and fantastically arranged. This CD has been in my player for some time now and I don't see it leaving for some time to come. Highly recommended the Rowdymen Rowdy Duty It's hard to go wrong with a good rockabilly band. And the Rowdymen, fronted by eternal scenester Rob Zaporzan on bass and Jason Allen on guitar , are as good as they come. They've got the look complete with ceiling-dusting quiffs,b-b-b-b-b-b-black slacks, and yoked shirts. And on this ferocious live set taped last summer at Times Change(d) the foursome show they also have the classic Sun sound;the bouncing bass lines,the slapback echo,the hiccuping vocals,the zippy Telecaster solos,the between-verse screams.All to which they deploy to full effect on golden oldies like Baby,Let's Play House,Lonesome Train, and Claudette, along with the mandatory joke rocker KISS'S Let Me Go, Rock and Roll. If this CD had one original song on it, maybe we would rate it even higher. Then again maybe not - as Sleepy LaBeef once told us "Why should I write songs when there's so many good ones out there?"
